Textiles - Beginner Garment Sewing

This four-session beginner-friendly sewing course introduces participants to the basics of garment construction using commercial sewing patterns. Students will learn essential sewing techniques while creating a simple shirt as their first project. If time permits, students will begin a second garment incorporating additional skills.

By the end of the course, students will have a completed wearable piece and the knowledge to pursue simple sewing projects with confidence.

 

In this class we will teach

  • How to understand and interpret a commercial sewing pattern
  • Learn basic garment construction techniques, including cutting fabric, pinning, and sewing seams
  • Gain experience in operating a sewing machine
  • Develop problem-solving skills to troubleshoot common sewing issues
  • Experiment with fabric choices and simple modifications for personal style

Our textile workshops cater to a range of skill levels, from novices eager to explore fabric arts to proficient textile artisans aiming to elevate their techniques.

Your Instructor: Our skilled textile instructors are dedicated to sharing their expertise and guiding you through the intricacies of working with fabrics. With extensive knowledge of various textile processes, they offer personalised guidance and feedback to support your creative journey.

This course is taught by: Dayna Gedney

Dayna is a multidisciplinary artist working in textiles, ceramics and wood. Dayna’s work exhibits finesse with materials and diligent refinement. Her work is as much about the process of making as it is about the final product, an ever developing exercise in not limiting material and perpetually expanding her skill set while exploring craft. Dayna is a graduate of the Furniture, Craft and Design program at Sheridan College.


Materials and Supplies: All necessary materials and tools for the workshop will be provided for use during the sessions. This includes test/sample fabrics, sewing supplies, pattern tracing materials, and various tools to use during studio time. Detailed information about additional materials needed for garments will be shared during the first class.

HCS Facilities and Equipment: Hamilton Craft Studios' well-equipped textile studio is designed to facilitate a range of fabric art. Our spacious and well-lit studio is equipped with sewing machines, cutting tables, dyeing facilities, and other essential tools to support your creative journey.
