Part-Time Ceramic Studio Technician

Hours: Sundays (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM) and Wednesdays (3:30 PM - 9:30 PM)

Position Overview
HCS is seeking a Part-Time Ceramic Studio Technician to join our team. This role focuses on supporting the daily operations of our ceramic studio, maintaining equipment and materials, and fostering a positive, inclusive environment for members and participants. As the studio grows, additional hours and responsibilities may be added.

Key Responsibilities
Studio Operations

Load and unload kilns, program bisque and glaze firings, and maintain firing logs.

Conduct kiln maintenance and ensure proper kiln shelf care.

Prepare and maintain glazes, including handling raw materials and inventory management.

Oversee reclaim clay preparation using the pug mill.

Perform general studio maintenance, including dust mitigation, cleaning, and tool upkeep.

Enforce studio safety protocols and guidelines.
Member and Participant Support

Provide assistance during drop-in sessions, answering questions and supporting attendees of varying skill levels.

Prepare studio and materials for workshops and classes.

Organize student and participant pieces for pickup post-firing.

Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that aligns with HCS’s values.
Administrative Duties

Maintain inventory and submit purchase orders to the admin team for supplies and tools.

Adjust kiln schedules to accommodate studio activity levels.

Communicate effectively with the admin team, members, and Emerging Artists to ensure smooth studio operations.

Submit end-of-shift reports, including updates on studio usage, maintenance needs, and attendee feedback.
Community Engagement and Sustainability

Promote sustainable practices, including reclaim clay processes.

Support community-building initiatives, such as organizing informal socials or assisting with club development.

Qualifications and Skills
-
Experience in ceramics studio practices, including kiln operation and maintenance.

Proficiency in glaze preparation and raw materials handling.

Familiarity with WHMIS (certification can be completed after hire).

Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to support diverse groups of participants.

Experience in community arts spaces or working in inclusive environments is an asset.

Ability to work independently, follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and contribute to process improvement.

Schedule and Availability

Fixed schedule: Sundays (8:30 AM - 2:30 PM) and Wednesdays (3:30 PM - 9:30 PM).

Flexibility to accommodate additional hours as the studio grows or needs evolve.

Advance notice required for planned absences; open communication expected in case of illness or emergencies.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly Wage: $20 - $22/hr (negotiable)

Growth Opportunities
As HCS continues to grow, this role will evolve to include additional responsibilities, such as coordinating volunteers, supporting new initiatives, additional work hours and schedules will be agreed upon with the successful candidate. The intention is to transition this role to a full-time position within 6-12 months. Growth opportunities depend on studio needs, membership growth, and studio revenue generation.
Personal Practice opportunities to explore Art, Craft and Design through studio access and courses to be discussed with the successful candidate.
