A four-week beginner sewing course exploring costume and drag garment construction. Students will learn to work with knit fabrics, install elastic, and experiment with colour blocking, layering, and volume. The course introduces basic sewing skills through the lens of creative self-expression and design play.

Participants will make a custom piece using beginner-friendly sewing techniques, practicing fabric selection, decorative applications, and simple pattern adjustments. This is an inclusive, skill-building class that celebrates creativity, identity, and craftsmanship.

Course Goals / Learning Objectives:

• Learn to safely operate a sewing machine and basic tools.
• Understand stretch fabrics and elastic installation.
• Explore colour blocking, layering, and decorative construction.
• Practice simple pattern drafting and alteration.
• Gain confidence designing and assembling creative garments.

Materials and Supplies: All necessary materials and tools for the workshop will be provided for use during the sessions. This includes test/sample fabrics, sewing supplies, pattern tracing materials, and various tools to use during studio time. Detailed information about additional materials needed for garments will be shared during the first class.

HCS Facilities and Equipment: Hamilton Craft Studios' well-equipped textile studio is designed to facilitate a range of fabric art. Our spacious and well-lit studio is equipped with sewing machines, cutting tables, dyeing facilities, and other essential tools to support your creative journey.
