Ceramics at HCS: Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done ceramics before. Where should I start?

If you’re new to ceramics, we recommend beginning with a course or workshop where an instructor can guide you through the basics.

Our 6-week Introduction to Clay course is designed for absolute beginners and offers a comprehensive overview of ceramics techniques, including handbuilding, wheel throwing, and glazing. These courses are typically offered monthly, and sometimes more often based on demand.

If you prefer a smaller commitment, we also offer 1.5-hour weekend drop-in sessions with an instructor. These are a great way to try ceramics at your own pace. You can book a Saturday or Sunday session anytime through our website.

Do I need to bring clay, tools, or materials?

No, we have you covered.
Clay is available for purchase in the studio, and we provide a communal collection of tools and glazes for you to use during your time here.

How does firing work?

Our studio technician manages all firings on a first-come, first-served basis.
The firing queue includes work from classes, drop-in sessions, and member projects. We run firings at least once a week, and often more frequently when needed.

What’s included in the clay price?

When you purchase clay from HCS, it includes both glazing and firing fees.
You won’t encounter any surprise costs as you work through your project.

Can I bring in my own clay?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own clay.
However, firing and glazing fees will be charged separately. We strongly encourage you to purchase clay from us whenever possible, as it allows us to anticipate how it will perform in our kilns and maintain consistent firing quality.

Can I bring in my own glazes?

Yes, but please be mindful.
If you plan to use glazes that are unusual or experimental, we ask that you check in with our studio technician before applying them. As a shared community space, it’s important that we maintain safe and reliable firing practices for everyone’s work.

What temperature do you fire your kilns?

Our primary kiln firings are at cone 6.
We also have a smaller kiln that may be used for other temperature ranges, at the discretion of the studio technician, depending on studio needs and project requirements.

Can I access the wheels without a membership?
